How to Recognize ADHD in a Child — Before It Affects Their Future

Parents come across the acronym ADHD very often in today's world. Of course, with this pressure, any mom of an active child will start to worry whether her baby has this syndrome.

So how do you tell the difference between simple disorganization and real Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder? Let’s break it down.

What is ADHD?

ADHD is attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. It arises due to disorders related to the functioning of the nervous system. It is a physiological peculiarity of a particular person's brain, not a caprice.

A child with the syndrome is physically unable to sit in one place and is unable to concentrate on one thing for even a few minutes.

Learning suffers because of this. The child can't get into the subject and is constantly distracted. Also, it is difficult for such a child to engage in any activity at all for a long time, which means that he or she cannot achieve mastery in anything.

But how do you know if it’s really ADHD—and not just boredom or lack of motivation?

ADHD vs. Regular Distraction

If the child is just lazy, it will be obvious. In that case, he will only avoid doing things that are boring for him.

But if the child can not engage for a long time even favorite interesting activities - this is a worrying sign and it is worth consulting a specialist.

Quick ADHD Checklist for Parents

Before heading to a doctor, ask yourself:

  1. Does my child jump from one task to another without finishing anything?
  2. Do they start activities with enthusiasm, but rarely complete them?
  3. Are they forgetful, often losing things?
  4. Do they talk constantly — even while working?
  5. Do they fidget, squirm, or tap their fingers?
  6. Do they blurt out answers or rush ahead without listening to instructions?
  7. Do they struggle with following rules or structured tasks?
  8. Do they frequently interrupt others or have trouble waiting their turn?

If you answered “yes” to more than half, it might be time to consult a specialist.

How Can You Help a Child With ADHD?

Only a doctor can diagnose ADHD and determine the right support plan. There are many different types and causes of ADHD — each requiring a unique approach. That’s why self-diagnosing or treating at home can be risky.

Do not treat your child on your own, even if the signs of ADHD are obvious. As with any problem, there are many nuances and there are many variations of this syndrome. Each of which requires a different approach.

Studies by Agris, Egorova, Matveeva, and Romanova explore these ADHD types and their neurological basis in depth.

What to Do if You Suspect ADHD

With the right support, children with ADHD can grow, thrive, and achieve great success.

Just look at people like Bill Gates, Justin Timberlake, Emma Watson, and Will Smith—all of whom have ADHD. It didn’t stop them from becoming global leaders in their fields.

Children with ADHD need more than patience—they need a personalized approach that supports how they learn best.

At Palme School, our teachers adapt to each student’s strengths and challenges. We understand that no two children are alike. Some need frequent breaks, some learn better through movement, others need visual aids or more repetition.
